The Art of the Job Search: An Information Session with the NYU Wasserman Center
We’ve all heard the saying that looking for a job is a job within itself. Putting your best foot forward takes time, effort, and skill. The NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development recently held an information session with our students on the general do’s and don’ts of job searching and how to be strategic and intentional when it comes to finding the right role.
The session was hosted by Danielle Cristal, Wasserman’s Senior Assistant Director of Graduate Student Career Development. She began her presentation by laying out some key learning objectives she would go on to cover such as how to effectively approach researching companies you’re interested in applying to, navigating offer negotiations, and general tips on how to be prudent in your search.
Danielle went on to discuss how essential it is to develop your story for prospective employers by clearly articulating what your skills are and how those skills would make you effective in the role(s) you’re seeking. The presentation emphasized the significance of being strategic in goal setting, i.e. how to set “SMART” goals — those that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-related. From there, the session delved into the necessity of networking such as how utilizing LinkedIn is essential and how it can be useful to leverage informational interviews. (For those who may not be familiar, informational interviews are conversations in which a person seeks insights/advice on a particular career path, industry, or company from an experienced and knowledgeable individual in said areas of interest.) Danielle also provided a concise but detailed overview on the NYU Violet Network, the university’s official online hub for professional networking open only to the NYU community. “The network is really about sharing and giving knowledge, and gaining it from one another,” Danielle highlighted.
Lastly, we particularly recommend checking out the Wasserman’s Resource Library, which you can access via Handshake by navigating to “Career Center” in the top right corner and then selecting “Resources”. This is where students and alumni can find guides to networking, resumes, cover letters, and more!
Ultimately, the session touched on a variety of helpful topics on effective job searching and left us with several useful takeaways.
