Meet the Fellow: Jason Altschuler
This entree is a part of our Meet the Fellow blog series, which introduces and highlights Faculty Fellows who have recently joined CDS.
Meet CDS Faculty Fellow Jason Altschuler, who will join us this fall. Jason is a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he is advised by Pablo Parrilo. His research is currently supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and the inaugural TwoSigma PhD Fellowship. After his year at CDS, Jason will start as an assistant professor at UPenn in the Wharton Department of Statistics and Data Science.
Jason graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, majoring in Computer Science. He earned his MS from MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. His research is broadly at the interface of optimization, probability, and machine learning. He is particularly interested in the design and analysis of large-scale optimization algorithms for practically relevant problems in engineering and data science. One recent focus is computational aspects of optimization problems over probability distributions, such as optimal transport.
Jason is interested in practical implementations as well as theory and has interned in the technology sector (at Apple Research and Google Research) as well as on Wall Street (at DE Shaw and Tower Research). He has worked as a teaching assistant at both MIT and Princeton. In his free time, he likes to play chess and in 2015 obtained an International Master norm in Spain.
“CDS is an exciting interdisciplinary hub for both the theory and practice of machine learning,” said Jason. “I’m looking forward to joining the center in the fall!”
