This entree is a part of our Meet the Fellow blog series, which introduces and highlights Faculty Fellows who have recently joined CDS.

Andrew Halterman, CDS Faculty Fellow

Meet CDS Faculty Fellow Andrew Halterman, who joined us this fall semester. Prior to joining CDS, he earned a PhD in political science from MIT. His dissertation focused on developing new techniques in natural language processing to better understand international conflict and civil war. Andy’s research interests lie in natural language processing (NLP), information extraction, security studies, and machine learning. More specifically, his current projects center on developing new methods for extracting political events from text, automatically learning events from text, resolving place names in text to their geographic coordinates, and more.

“My research is at the intersection of two disciplines, political science and computer science, and it’s exciting to be at a center that has such strengths in both. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop new techniques to help researchers in political science answer their questions using text data,” says Andy.
