Meet the Faculty: Louis Mittel

Meet Louis Mittel, who started as Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at CDS this month. Louis will join the CDS community with an extensive background in data science applications within the financial industry and a strong commitment to educational mentorship.
“As Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at CDS, I am thrilled to contribute to and further enhance our data science curriculum to help students succeed in this rapidly evolving field,” said Louis. “I can’t think of a better place to do this than NYU Center for Data Science.”
Louis’ professional background includes working as a Principal at EML Capital Management from 2019 to 2022, focusing on research and development of quantitative trading strategies tailored to the corporate credit market. Utilizing the company’s proprietary pricing algorithm, he helped launch a hedge fund that deployed the algorithm for high volume intraday trading. He previously worked as a Senior Consultant at Protiviti, focusing on forecasting models for global banks.
In 2018, Louis received his PhD in Statistics from Columbia University advised by Professor Daniel Rabinowitz. He completed his doctoral studies with a dissertation titled, “Efficient Estimation of the Expectation of a Latent Variable in the Presence of Subject-specific Ancillaries.” Before his PhD, he obtained his MPhil and MS in Statistics from Columbia.
Throughout his academic journey, Louis was involved in teaching and mentorship. He served as a course instructor for Introduction to Statistical Reasoning and Calculus Based Introduction to Statistics at Columbia along with working as a Teaching Assistant for a variety of undergraduate and graduate level statistics courses.
His research has been published in The Journal of Heredity and cited in publications such as ESPN and Advisor Perspectives.
