Introducing the joint Data Science and Mathematics major for undergrads
NYU’s Center for Data Science (or CDS) was established in 2013 with the goal of creating a place to train the next generation of data science researchers and professionals. Since our opening, we have launched our Masters in Data Science program, one of the first PhD programs in Data Science, and Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, a joint Bachelor’s degree in Data Science and Computer Science, and an undergraduate minor in Data Science.
It has been thrilling to watch these programs and our students thrive over the years. That is why we are especially excited to announce that beginning next semester we will be offering a joint Bachelor’s degree in Data Science and Mathematics. This program was a logical next step for CDS given our close relationship with the Courant Institute’s Department of Mathematics and the overwhelming popularity of our existing undergraduate offerings.
The joint major requires eighteen courses totalling 72 credit points and features courses from CDS and Courant’s Department of Mathematics, as well as courses in Courant’s Department of Computer Science. In line with much of what we do at CDS, the major is designed to provide an interdisciplinary education that trains students to use data science methods as well as empowers them to understand the mathematical theories that go into the analysis of large data sets. It will also allow students to apply mathematical theories to real-world challenges that need data science and computational solutions.
We’re so excited to welcome our first cohort of joint Data Science and Mathematics students in the near future. This new program represents an amazing opportunity for CDS, Courant, and our students to grow our already lively community.
