Between attending classes and studying for exams, every undergrad student finds time to wonder about what they will do after they receive their degree. In fact, career planning can be a daunting task for people at any point in their career but especially for those who are just starting out. This is why CDS started our Undergrad Career Week: to help give our students a helping hand in planning their professional life after graduation.

The week, which took place from March 1st through 5th, is designed to provide an opportunity for CDS undergrads to learn about possible careers in data science. Given the broad reach of the data science field, there are opportunities in almost all domains in both research and in-industry. As such, the sessions offered during Undergrad Career Week reflect the wide reach of data science. Students participated in info sessions on industry internships as well as what a career in data science research could look like.

For one student, Keerthana Manivasakan, an information session helped illuminate a whole new career in financial analytics:

“I actually didn’t know [investment analytics companies] existed on a corporate level; I assumed most, if not all investment firms did their risk management in house … Now that I know, I think I’m going to look into other data analyst firms and see what positions they have. Would love to see more of this in the future!”

We hope that Undergrad Career Week gave all of our Data Science majors and minors information that will empower them to start their careers strong!
