CDS students attend Consortium of Data Science in Training
The future of data science will be defined by the practitioners that are being trained today. It was with this in mind that the Michigan Institute for Data Science at Michigan University created their Consortium of Data Scientists in Training which took place in October.
The event, which according to the Michigan Institute of Data Science’s website exists to “To build a network for these students and postdoctoral fellows … and nurture them to become the next generation of academic leaders in data science,” was attended by students from 28 universities, including NYU. Students at the event participated in mentoring session, and/or presented their data science research, as CDS PhD student Chris Ick did. Chris took a moment to reflect on the experience by saying:
“I’m very thankful for the opportunity granted by attending the Michigan Institute for Data Science’s Consortium for Data Scientists in training. Being able to share my work amongst so many other up-and-coming researchers was an opportunity not only to share what my group has been working on, but also provided a stimulating cross-discipline dialogue, allowing me to comment on works presented in other human-facing fields.”
The sessions were indeed designed to encourage cross disciplinary exchange as speakers and presenters came from many academic backgrounds including political science, engineering and computer science. According the Chris the Consortium as a whole was not only helpful for his research but also for his optimism in the field of data science itself:
“With the quality of research and fascinating work presented, I’m optimistic for the future of the field.”
We are excited to see what the future of this amazing event holds in the years to come as more data scientists in training from NYU and around the country come to exchange ideas.
