CDS PhD Student, Angelica Chen

At CDS, we have no shortage of opportunities to feel proud of our students’ accomplishments. We are so happy to share in the celebration of one such accomplishment by PhD student Angelica Chen who was recently named an honorable mention in this year’s cohort of NSF Graduate Research Fellowship recipients.

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (or NSF GRFP) is a highly competitive award given by the National Science Foundation each year to outstanding graduate students in NSF-sponsored fields who are pursuing either a Master’s or doctoral degree at a US accredited education institution. Receipts of the award often go on to be leaders in their chosen field and make significant contributions in both research and teaching. Alumni of the NSF GRF program include Sergey Brin, Amy Mainzer and Steven Chu.

Angelica was given her honorable mention for her work on deep learning in natural language processing. As a PhD student at CDS, she is advised by Professors Kyunghyun Cho and Samuel Bowman. She’s primarily interested in the fields of natural language understanding and model robustness. She came to CDS after working at Google and receiving her Bachelor’s degree with high honors from Princeton University. We asked her to remark on receiving such a prestigious honor and she remarked:

“I’m super grateful to my advisors who both provided immensely helpful guidance throughout the application process, and to the NSF for providing this great opportunity!”

We have no doubt that this honor is just the beginning of the remarkable achievements we’ll see from Angelica in the future. We hope you all join us in offering her your more enthusiastic congratulations!
