CDS Spotlight: A new paper from our Medical Track PhD cohort

CDS data scientists conduct research in all sorts of different fields from engineering to political science to medicine. We created our medical track PhD program to encourage interdisciplinary work between the data science and medical fields at CDS. Students in this program complete the curriculum for the PhD in Data Science while also taking electives from the NYU School of Medicine and working with faculty from that school on their research.

Our first cohort of students from this track started this Fall, and have already begun producing amazing insights into both fields. Just a few weeks ago, medical track student Taro Makino along with others released a paper which proposes a framework for comparing human and machine perception in medical diagnosis. They demonstrate the framework with a case study in breast cancer screening, and reveal significant differences between radiologists and deep neural networks. Their work highlights the importance of performing subgroup analysis in order to draw precise and correct conclusions when comparing human and machine perception.

We are excited to see this amazing work coming from our first cohort of medical track PhDs. We can’t wait to see what ideas our next cohort brings to CDS.
