We’re excited to announce that CDS is a 2020 sponsor for the Grace Hopper 20th Celebration (Virtual) Career Fair, presented by AnitaB.org. AnitaB’s objective is to support inclusive technology and intersectional gender and pay parity. The celebration was founded in 1994 by Dr. Anita Borg and Dr. Telle Whitney in honor of Grace Hopper’s legacy and contributions. For those who may not be aware, Grace Hopper was an American computer scientist and US Navy Rear Admiral. She assisted in the creation of the first compiler for computer languages and was the first female recipient of the National Medal of Technology in 1991.

Here’s some key information about this year’s event. The conference, which is taking place from September 29-October 3, featured Serena Williams as the opening keynote speaker and will have Megan Rapinoe as its closing. Other notable speakers from the industry include Marian Croak, Ellen Pao, and Dr. Lisa Su. The conference will have over 30,000+ attendees from 115 countries, 250+ speakers, and 200+ sessions. 2020’s theme is #TogetherWeBuild.

Employing the celebration’s offerings and dedication to diversity, CDS was able to provide complimentary registration to its eligible students, faculty, and researchers. At the celebration, CDS participants are able to take advantage of a variety of mentoring and networking opportunities. CDS is delighted for this opportunity to connect with women in the tech industry who are interested in potentially furthering their education.

“I have been interested in representing CDS at the Grace Hopper Celebration ever since I heard about it four years ago! Unfortunately, we were not in the position to get involved at that time, but we planted a seed back then that came to fruition in 2020. I am proud of CDS for sponsoring GHC this year and I hope we can continue to be a part of this community. This was a great way to continue our commitment to the recruitment of students from diverse backgrounds and our promise to create a more inclusive space at the NYU Center for Data Science.” — Loraine Nascimento, NYU CDS Head of External Relations and Career Development
