CDS Members Organize and Present at the NYU AI School
CDS PhD students Phu Mon Htut (Phu), Swapneel Mehta, and Nikita Nangia alongside peers including Alex Wang, who is a NYU computer science PhD student and Kianté Brantley (who has collaborated with CDS on research previously), recently organized the NYU AI School under the supervision of Sam Bowman, CDS assistant professor of linguistics and data science. The NYU AI School was a week-long education on both artificial intelligence and machine learning, which took place entirely online, January 4–8, 2021. The free introductory course included a blend of lectures, labs, research talks, group discussions, and office hours led by industry experts. The school was mobilized (primarily) by the members of the Machine Learning for Language Lab, which is a team of NYU researchers dedicated to developing and studying state-of-the-art machine learning methods for natural language processing (NLP). This year’s school is essentially an updated version of the original workshop that occurred just over a year ago in October 2019.
The course featured an assortment of speakers within the data science space including CDS members professor of data science and mathematics, Carlos Fernandez-Granda, assistant professor of computer science and data science Andrew Gordon Wilson, and (CDS affiliated) professor of computer science Lerrel Pinto. The speaker list also included a number of highly regarded industry professional speakers such as Sara Hooker, a research scholar at Google Brain, Naila Murray, who is head of engineering at Facebook AI Research EMEA, Pablo Samuel Castro, a research software Engineer at Google Brain, and several more.
The talks encompassed a number of topics such as math in machine learning, how to build a career in machine learning, reinforcement learning, and more.
