CDS loves Love Data Week!

It goes without saying that at CDS, we love data. That is why we are so happy to be participating in Love Data Week at NYU. For those unfamiliar with the tradition, “Love Data Week” is an event celebrated at universities across the country the week before Valentine’s Day. According to lovedataweek.org the celebration is meant to, “raise awareness and build a community to engage on topics related to research data management, sharing, preservation, reuse, and library-based research data services.”

Our Data Science Club has put together a week long Datathon in partnership with NYU Data Services. The NYU’s Love Data Week started with a kick-off event on February 5th where participants were introduced to the rules of the datathon and the data sets they’d be using. Datathon organizer, Aditya Singhal, told us what we can expect from the rest of this year’s Love Data Week:

“[There will be] custom workshops, networking events, internship opportunities and tangible prizes for winners and participants! We also have 3D Printed Trophies!”

Just some of the workshops planned for this week include: “Intro to the UNIX Shell”, “Data Cleaning for GIS”, and “Data Cleaning and Management with Python.” Those who are interested can also partake in one of three data challenges provided by the Bobst library. Each challenge is focused on a particular data science track. The tracks for this year’s data science challenges are natural language processing, anonymizing data, and lastly, a sandbox challenge on geo-spatial data.
