CDS Hosts Company Information Sessions with JPMorgan Chase and Hyperscience

At CDS, we regularly hold what we call company information sessions to give our current students the opportunity to meet with top companies seeking to hire data scientists and other related roles. On Friday, September 17, we held two company information sessions. One with JPMorgan Chase Bank’s Consumer & Community Banking (CCB) Business Modeling team and the other with the machine learning engineering team at Hyperscience, an AI platform that enables enterprise organizations and government agencies to automate data-centric processes.

JPMorgan Chase

The Chase session featured a presentation and Q&A primarily facilitated by Executive Director of Operations Modeling and NYU Stern graduate Rebecca Sela and Applied AI Scientist and recent NYU Courant Institute graduate Nicholas Hespe. Also in attendance on the Chase end were Applied AI Machine Learning Lead & CCB Vice President Anand Joglekar, Executive Director of Quantitative Modeling Lu Tan, and CDS alumnus Taurean Parker who graduated from our MS program in 2019 and is currently a Quantitative Modeling/Data Science Associate at Chase. (Taurean is the first African-American to earn an advanced degree in data science from NYU.)

The presentation highlighted the unique problems the CCB modeling team is currently trying to solve and the benefits of joining the Chase team in the data science/computer science space. Given that Chase is the largest private bank in the United States and the second-largest private bank in the world, it practically goes without saying that the company’s size and prominence present a great opportunity to work with massive datasets. In addition to the immense data employees are able to explore, the team specifically spoke to the internal mobility that Chase also has to offer. Employees have the ability to easily transition to different teams and tackle new and exciting challenges. It was also highlighted that Chase has a number of business resources groups that provide great networking opportunities such as NextGen, which focuses on engaging early career professionals to network, AsPIRE (Asian & Pacific Islanders Reaching for Excellence), Women On the Move, PRIDE (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender + and Ally Resource Group), and BOLD (Black Organization for Leadership Development).

Hyperscience

The Hyperscience session included a presentation and Q&A, primarily facilitated by Hyperscience Technical Recruiter Sasha Ree and Machine Learning Engineering Managers Ceena Modarres and Louis Duperier. The presentation covered an overview of the Hyperscience Platform, some of the Hyperscience Machine Learning team’s current focuses, the company’s first-ever internship program which they are actively recruiting for, and their education initiative, Hyperscience Learn.

As explained in detail by Ceena and Louis, the ML team is currently focusing on automating various document processing solutions. This includes continuing to optimize their transcription models and pipelines for reading text on both physical and digital documents as well as mobile screen captures.

Following this overview, Sasha delved into details about the Hyperscience Tech Internship, which will give interns the opportunity to solve real customer-facing problems within the machine learning team. Example internship projects include logo segmentation, document table detection, and complex checkboxes support. Each intern will be assigned a mentor on their start date and will receive continuous on-going feedback throughout the duration of the internship. The program is set to occur from June to August 2022 and is geared towards undergraduate and graduate students graduating in 2022–2023.

Lastly, the team touched on Hyperscience Learn, an educational program aimed at sharing and increasing AI/ML software engineering knowledge among the AI/machine learning and wider engineering communities. The program is geared toward all levels from those earlier in their careers to seasoned industry professionals. “Deep Learning for Computer Vision” is the next upcoming event, which will take place via Zoom on October 7, 12:00pm EST.
