CDS Faculty Yann LeCun and Juliana Freire elected as fellows for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Congratulations to CDS faculty Yann LeCun and Juliana Freire! Yann and Juliana were recently elected as fellows to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), an organization committed to advancing science, engineering, and innovating throughout the world for the benefit of all people. The fellowship was established to honor a distinguished cadre of scientists, engineers, and innovators who have been recognized for their achievements within their community.
About the fellows:
Yann LeCun is Silver Professor at NYU affiliated with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Center for Data Science, as well as Vice President and Chief AI Scientist at Meta. His research interests include machine learning and artificial intelligence, with applications to computer vision, natural language understanding, robotics, and computational neuroscience. He is best known for his work in deep learning and the invention of the convolutional network method which is widely used for image, video, and speech recognition.
Juliana Freire is a Professor of Computer Science and Data Science at New York University. She was the elected chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Management of Data (SIGMOD), served as a council member of the Computing Research Association’s Computing Community Consortium (CCC), and was the NYU lead investigator for the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment. . She develops methods and systems that enable a wide range of users to obtain trustworthy insights from data. This spans topics in large-scale data analysis and integration, visualization, machine learning, provenance management, and web information discovery, and different application areas, including urban analytics, predictive modeling, and computational reproducibility.
