CDS Faculty Jonathan Niles-Weed Wins Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship
Congratulations to CDS faculty Jonathan Niles-Weed! Jonathan was recently awarded a fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which honors “extraordinary U.S. and Canadian researchers whose creativity, innovation, and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of leaders.” The foundation rewards early-career scientists and scholars who have the potential to revolutionize their fields of study by providing fellows with $75,000 over the course of two years to help fund their research.

About Professor Jonathan Niles-Weed:
Jonathan Niles-Weed is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Data Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Center for Data Science at NYU, where he is a core member of the Math and Data and STAT groups.
Niles-Weed studies the mathematical aspects of data science, with a focus on statistical and computational problems arising from data with geometric structure. Currently, he is developing a statistical theory of optimal transport, an 18th-century mathematical technique which has been revitalized by its increasing popularity in deep learning, physics, and computational biology.
