The first cohort of the Spring 2021 CURP, CDS Undergraduate Research Program in Partnership with the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP), the largest, most notable organization dedicated to the advancement of the African-American physics community, has begun this month.

CURP is a research mentorship program that was created for a diverse group of undergraduate students who have completed at least two years of university-level coursework and have an interest in conducting research in data science. Ultimately, the program aims to provide talented students who have an interest in data science with opportunities to develop necessary skills and knowledge to participate in meaningful research collaborations. The program also provides students with access to a community of academic peers and world renowned researchers who can advise, mentor, and encourage them.

The onboarding of this initial cohort is made possible by our founding partner Capital One. We initially partnered with Capital One in 2018 via our Partners Program in the establishment of our Diversity Initiative, which seeks to build a diverse and inclusive community at CDS.

“As Director of the Center for Data Science, I am thrilled for this new initiative to recruit talented STEM undergraduates to grow and learn through exciting data science research projects and top-notch mentorship. Thanks to support from Capital One, we are able to create an inclusive environment, bringing together students of diverse backgrounds in an extraordinary opportunity to build the next generation of leaders in data science,” says CDS Director, Julia Kempe.

“Capital One believes diverse perspectives fosters collaboration and encourages innovative ideas, so we’re excited to continue our partnership with the NYU CDS diversity initiative and support the first CURP cohort this spring,” said Abhijit Bose, head of Capital One’s Center for Machine Learning. “We look forward to seeing these students expand their data science skills as they work to solve today’s complex business problems .”

“We are extremely grateful to have a dedicated diversity partner in Capital One. They helped launch the NYU Center for Data Science diversity initiative back in 2017 and have maintained the course by supporting CURP in 2021. Capital One has also made a commitment beyond funding by facilitating career and professional development opportunities for the CURP cohort. This will further our efforts as partners in diversity to develop more underrepresented students in STEM,” says Loraine Nascimento, CDS Head of External Relations and Career Development.
